Useful Photography is a magazine which gives a platform to imagery that is part of our everyday lives but which is rarely studied or appreciated; for example pictures from catalogues, instruction manuals, text books, medical and scientific journals, packaging, CCTV, etc. Images that have been made for a practical purpose, whose makers remain completely anonymous. Through a process of careful selection and the creation of a new context in the magazine, galleries and on the Useful Photography website, these photographs are re-presented and reconsidered.
“….In compiling 250 photographs of all kinds of goods posted on ebay, Useful Photography 002 reads like an archaeological report from the future, investigating a 21st century midden heap and listing the discarded detritus of our civilization…”
Gerry Badger, from The Photobook: A History volume 2, by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, Phaidon 2006.
